A 1968 graduate of Geneva High, Richie played on the league championship Go-Go Panthers in 1967 and 1968. He was all-conference both his junior and senior years. He was the team MVP as a senior and was selected to the Section V All-Tournament Team and the All-Greater Rochester Team. He played on the varsity baseball team which also won league titles in 1968 and 1969.
Richie played at Hobart in 1969 and Auburn Community College in 1970 where he was a unanimous selection to the NYS-JAS All-Conference team. He led the conference in scoring with 22 ppg. He played at Southampton College in 1971 and 1972 and was selected to the All- CACC team both years. Southampton won the NCAA College Division Regional Championship in 1971 and the CACC Championship both years. In 1976 he played in the Malbas-European Pro League and also coached the Malbas Junior team to the National Swedish Championship.
