John grew up in Geneva and graduated from Geneva High in 1928. He attended Hobart College where he lettered in cross country and lacrosse. In 1933 he attended George Williams College in Chicago and graduated with a degree in education. While there he coached, played shortstop, and captained the baseball team. From 1933 to 1948, Johnny worked with many youth organizations in the Chicago area including the Illinois Institute for Juvenile Research where he coached football, basketball, and baseball. He was a scout for the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds for over 22 years.
Johnny moved to Clifton Springs in 1948 and became director of the YMCA. He also coached baseball and cross country at Hobart College. Johnnie dedicated his life to helping youngsters through athletics and has been honored many times for his unselfish and outstanding efforts in both the Chicago area and the Finger Lakes.
