Inducted Inaugural Class of 1990
John Choffin started playing “big time” baseball at the early age of 17 when he was chosen to play for the Geneva Athletic Club in the Democrat & Chronicle League. At this time in his career he was an infielder and pitcher…and was acclaimed for his no-hit, no-run game against Phelps. This Geneva team was undefeated that year. In 1928 John played for the Geneva semi-pro team in the Empire State League as 3rd baseman. He played in this league until 1930. In 1929 he was offered a try-out with the St. Louis Cardinals, but could not afford the expense to go out there. In 1930 John was in California and played semi-pro ball as a 3rd baseman in the West Coast League. Back home in 1931, he re-joined his old teammates and played for Geneva until 1934 when fast pitch softball dominated the local area. John was an excellent glove man and a cagey batter. He played on a number of “all-star” teams in his career.
