Angelo graduated from Geneva High in 1938 where he was a four-year letterwinner on the football team. He was voted team MVP and won the coveted Bing Rogers Award his junior year. Angelo was a versatile athlete playing a different position all four years. He was named team captain his senior year.

After his high school years, Angelo played semi-pro football for the Geneva team against teams from Buffalo, Syracuse, Binghamton, Elmira, and Endicott. These teams contained a large number of ex-college stars. He retired from semi-pro football at the age of 36 which attests to his outstanding athletic abilities for so many years.
