Geneva High did not lose a single Finger Lakes league game during the two years that John started in goal for the Panthers. He was all-league his junior and senior years and was named honorable mention all-state his senior year. John also lettered in football and volleyball and was captain of all three teams his senior year.

He went on to play lacrosse at Division I Washington and Lee University where he was a three year starter in goalie and served as team captain his senior year. His 400 career saves ranks 7th all-time at W&L and his 56.6% career save percentage ranks 8th all-time in school history. He was the team MVP his senior year and the Most Improved Player his freshman year. A scholar-athlete, John graduated Magna Cum Laude with an undergraduate degree in Physics Engineering and Mathematics in 1985 from Washington and Lee.
