Mike’s varsity swimming career began at Geneva High in the 7th grade earning himself the “Rookie of the Year” award. During his sophomore year he broke the GHS record in the 50 yard Freestyle which stood for 15 years. He also anchored the GHS record breaking Freestyle Relay which earned him league and sectional honors. As a junior he broke his own record in the 50 Freestyle and qualified for a berth in the State Tournament. His senior year was his most productive and memorable when he earned “Outstanding Senior Swimmer” Award recognition by the Finger Lakes coaches. At the state qualifiers he again broke his GHS record in the 50 Free (21.77) and set a GHS record in the 100 Freestyle (48.20). He went on to medal as a state finalist in both events. His record still stands as being the fastest swimmer in GHS history. Mike had 13 all-league and all-league honorable mention honors including 4 league titles. He won 4 sectional titles and setting 2 sectional class records.
Coach Randy Grenier said of him, “Mike is the hardest working athlete I have ever coached, in any sport.” Mike went on to swim at Division I Eastern Michigan where he lettered in swimming while maintaining a 3.5 GPA.
