Steve was a three-sport star at Geneva High, graduating in 1969. A standout in football, he was named the All-Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes All-Conference 1st Teams in both his junior and senior years. He was an All-State 2nd team selection at quarterback his senior year. Steve was the Section V high jump champion and a state meet qualifier for three years. He set a Section V high jump record at 6’5”. He was also an All-Conference selection in basketball in junior and senior years. He was named to the Section V All-Tournament team his junior year and the All-Greater Rochester team his senior year when he led the league in scoring.

Steve attended Mount Herman prep school in Massachusetts, where he earned All-New England Prep School honors in both football and basketball. He went on to Cornell University where he played football and was a three-year starter on defense. He was an All-Ivy League honorable mention pick and was named an ECAC sophomore of the week. Steve was also on the track team and broke the freshman high jump mark at 6’6”.
