A star basketball player at Geneva High, Mary was named 1st-team All-Finger Lakes East all four years of her high school career. An all-around player Mary averaged 19.5 points per game as a freshman and 23.3 pp her last three years. Her high game was 38 against Waterloo her senior year. She controlled the boards averaging in double figures in rebounds. She was also a strong defender, collecting 58 steals her sophomore year and an amazing 75 as a junior.

Mary capped off her basketball career by leading her team to the league title and the Section V Class A finals. She was named MVP of the tournament even though her team lost 48-40 in the finals. The day following the game was declared ''Mary Murphy Day'' in the high school. She also lettered in softball and was the team MVP her sophomore year.
