A three sport athlete in high school, John lettered in football, swimming, and lacrosse serving as team captain of all three teams his senior year. In his high school career lax career the Panthers were undefeated at home all four years including a win over West Genesee. They were also in the Upstate championship games his junior and senior years. John was all-league in football his senior year. John went on to Brockport where he played varsity lacrosse for four years and was named to the second team SUNYAC his senior year.

John returned to teach and coach at his alma mater. He coached lacrosse, football, and swimming. He coached varsity lacrosse for 17 years with an overall record of 243-89. His teams captured seven league titles, three Section V championships, and reached the Final Four in the State Championship twice. He also coached four All-American players. He coached football for twenty two years at various levels and coached swimming for seven years. John served as Athletic Director from 1988 to 1998 and was instrumental in starting Boys Hockey and Girls Lacrosse at GHS. While AD Geneva achieved sectional championships in softball, basketball, lacrosse, track and baseball. He is a state and sectional level official in both swimming and lacrosse. The positive impact John had on his players is still felt today through his many players that are coaching at the high school and collegiate level.
