Nick was an outstanding placekicker at DeSales High School and the University of Iowa where he was named to the Big Ten All-Academic team. As an eleven-year old, Nick was the state champion in the Ford Motor Co. Punt, Pass, and Kick contest and competed in the National Eastern finals. He was also an all-league pitcher tossing back-to-back no-hitters for DeSales his senior year and posting an ERA of .056.

After graduating from DeSales in 1973, Nick began his college career at Xavier University where he converted 24 consecutive PATs. He moved on to the University of Iowa when Xavier dropped football. He set school records at Iowa with a 47-yard field goal as a sophomore and a 50-yard FG his junior year. In his senior year he kicked the deciding point as Iowa beat Penn State 7-6 and finished his career second on the all-time scoring list at Iowa. He was signed by the Buffalo Bills as a free agent but asked to be released after an injury to his kicking leg. Nick had a 30-year coaching career serving as an assistant at Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa, Northwestern and Iowa State and as head coach at Fordam and Drake.
