A 1939 graduate of Geneva High, Bob lettered in five sports. He played football, basketball, lacrosse, track, and cross country. He was voted the Outstanding Athlete his senior year.
Bob attended Hobart College and was the quarterback and running back on the 1939 undefeated freshman football team. He played varsity football, basketball, and lacrosse. He left college during World War II where he served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1945. He returned to Hobart after the war and was named co-captain of the 1946 lacrosse team. He was an All-American in lacrosse and played in the 1946 North-South game.
