A standout in football and track, his record 10.7 in the 100 still stands today. John was also a member of the record setting 800 relay team along with his teammates Joe Woody, John Lee, and Dick Mungo. That record of 1:31.4 still stands today as well. He was unbeaten in league competition for four years and was a sectional champion in the 100 and as a member of the 800 relay. He helped lead the track team to four straight league titles and a sectional championship. John was a 4-year starter on the varsity football team and in his senior year scored 14 touchdowns and rushed for over 1000 yards including 259 yards and five TDs against DeSales. He was also named to the all-league team at fullback that year. John wrestled his junior and senior years and finished second in the sectionals.
John went on to play football at Winona State and the University of Massachusetts. He also played semi-pro football in Boston for six years. His high school coach, Ray Gagnon described John as having outstanding speed and an “unselfish team player.”
